Copy the Short’s link
Tap Share under the Short and choose Copy link. You will get a youtube.com/shorts/ address, though a normal watch link or a youtu.be link for the same video works just as well.
Paste and pick the top quality
Drop the link in, tap Get video, and take the highest row. A Short uploaded at 1080×1920 will download at that size, which matters if you plan to re-edit it or post it elsewhere.
Why some tools give you a soft, small file
They take the first ready-made MP4 they find. For vertical video that is often a heavily downscaled encode. Sorting by resolution first — which is what happens here — avoids that.
Getting just the sound
Choose "Audio only" for an MP3 of the Short’s audio, converted from the dedicated audio stream rather than pulled out of the video.
Where the file goes
On Android it lands in Downloads and shows up in your gallery. On iPhone it lands in Files → Downloads, and you can share it into Photos from there. On desktop it goes to your normal downloads folder.
Watermarks
YouTube does not stamp Shorts, so the file is clean. If a creator posted a Short that they originally made in TikTok, any TikTok logo is part of their footage and no tool can remove it without cropping the frame.
Shorts versus normal videos
A Short is not a separate kind of file. YouTube stores it exactly like any other upload and simply presents it in a vertical player when it is under the length limit and shaped 9:16. That is why a /shorts/ link, a /watch/ link and a youtu.be link for the same video all work identically here, and why the quality list looks the same as it does for a landscape video.
Using a Short in your own edit
If you are downloading a Short to cut into something else, take the highest resolution offered rather than the smallest — editors re-compress on export, and starting from a low-resolution source compounds the loss. And take the same care with permission as you would with any footage: a Short being short does not make it free to reuse. Ask the creator, or stick to your own uploads.
When a Short will not download
A handful of causes cover nearly every failure. The video is age-restricted, which means YouTube requires a signed-in session to serve it and no anonymous tool can reach it. The video is private or unlisted-and-since-removed. The channel is region-blocked where the server sits, which produces a different error and sometimes resolves on its own. Or the link points at a channel’s Shorts shelf rather than a single Short — check that the URL ends in a video ID. If a Short plays for you in a logged-out browser window and still fails here, that is worth reporting, because it usually means YouTube changed something and the engine needs updating.
Frame rate, aspect ratio and re-uploading
Shorts are usually 30fps at 1080×1920, though creators shooting on newer phones sometimes upload 60fps. If you are cutting a downloaded Short into a timeline, match your sequence to the source rather than the other way round — dropping 60fps footage into a 30fps timeline throws away half the frames, and stretching 30fps to 60 produces the stuttery look people associate with reposted content. If you plan to re-upload to another platform, check its aspect ratio first: 9:16 travels cleanly to Reels and TikTok, but posting it to a landscape feed will letterbox it heavily.
